Today, 23rd, April we celebrate the passing of two great literary giants. Both contributed to elevate the level of the language and culture to which they belonged in a similar way.
shakespeare and cervantes
  • April 23, 1616, is given as the death date for both Shakespeare and Cervantes, but neither man died on that day. Spanish records from that time write down the date of death as the date of burial. So we know Cervantes was buried on April 23, which means he probably died on April 22. Shakespeare actually died 11 days after Cervantes.
  • Don Quixote by Cervantes and the  Shakespeare works have been translated into more than 140 languages.
  • Shakespeare plays have formed the basis of more than 1,000 film scripts. About 50 feature-film versions of Don Quixote have been made in various languages.
  • It is reported but not confirmed that Cervantes’ remains were located just last year in Madrid, under the Convent of the Barefoot Trinitarians. Spain hopes the church will draw tourists like those who flock to Stratford-upon-Avon.
  • Why do we commemorate the deaths of Cervantes and Shakespeare? Some might point to a particular story, play, or poem. Others might answer with a specific character: Hamlet or Falstaff, Sancho Panza or don Quijote. But what about the elusive figures of the authors themselves? For devotees of Shakespeare, there is a desire to draw closer to the writer who is at once so present to us and yet so unknown. Similarly, throughout Cervantes’ works, a distinctive narrative voice bonds readers with the author, even if the narrator(s) cannot be taken as Cervantes himself. Cervantes addresses the Novelas ejemplares to his “amantísimo lector,” most beloved reader, and we in turn love him back.
  • As Shakespeare left an indelible mark on the English language, Spanish has been referred to as “la lengua de Cervantes,” the language of Cervantes. This is due not just to the inventiveness of Cervantes’ writing, but also to its orality. To read Don Quijote is to engage deeply with the act of storytelling in many forms.

AN OPINION ESSAY

THE TASADAY PEOPLE´S TRICK

In 1971,In the Philippines, some men discovered a group of 25 people in the rainforest. They called themselves Tasaday people and they lived like cave people in the stone age. They had fire but they did not use the wheel, did not have agriculture. They collected plants to eat and they trapped fish in the river. They were very peaceful people and they believed that the animals were their natural friends. The scientists claimed for protection and many governments gave money to the Philippines to make sure the Tasaday people were safe. They stopped all tree-cutting and road building in the area. A few months later, a journalist visited the Tasadays and he discovered that these people lived in houses, not in caves, they watched television and they wore modern clothes. They told the journalist that they were paid to look like prehistoric people. When the scientists returned very angry they found Tasadays living like in the stone age cave people again. Today that status is wid...
